A full audience heard a fascinating pair of talks with an enjoyable lunch in between. The morning presentation was a history of the Royal Collection and the afternoon looked as a wide range of Royal Portraits. Click here to see some photographs.

St Cuthbert's Conference Centre, Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh
The study day followed the 'Origins and History of Landscape Painting' from early Christian paintings which show symbolic 'backgrounds' with no perspective and very precipitous mountains; to the age when artists became aware and were truly in awe of 'Nature'; through to the representational images of landscape which the impressionists artists and their followers explored. From Claude Lorraine, Poussin to Constable and Turner we saw how their art was to influence such people as Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin; the final artist discussed was Paul Nash, whose war landscapes from both World Wars are full of innovations for the future of landscape painting. From background to very much foreground the art of landscape painting proved to be a fascinating study subject and an enthusiastic audience of 119 thoroughly enjoyed a most entertaining and informative day. This study day was partly sponsored by Bearns, Hampton and Littlewood, the Fine Art Auction House who brought a small selling exhibition of English Landscape paintings.
