This took the form of a study day at the Phoenix Hall, Bovey Tracey on 24 November 2011 .
Over 50 church recorders from round the South West area enjoyed a very interesting talk on the iconography of windows by Michael Swift, the Adviser on Stained Glass to the Diocese of Truro. A past church recorder himself, Mr Swift impressed on us the importance of 'reading' a window before recording it, and illustrated his point by showing us many of the symbols which we are likely to come across in churches, and their meaning.
A talk by Torquil McNeilage, an expert monument conservator and restorer, gave us an illustrated talk on the changes in style of memorials through the centuries, and the stones which were used to make the monuments. He then gave us a fascinating insight into his work as a restorer and how he rebuilds a monument which is in danger of collapse.
Altogether, an outstanding day for the church recorders.
