These 2 Study Days are offered in conjunction with the Accredited Course at Plymouth University. They are open to all members of NADFAS and friends.
The Second Elizabethan Age British Art since 1952
29th January 2009 Lecturer: Frank Woodgate
From the early years of Queen Elizabeths reign to her Golden Jubilee in 2002, British Art moved to the forefront of the international avant-garde, where it remains today. World-renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and David Hockney dominate the early part of the period, while more recently Chris Ofili, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin use a variety of media which can surprise and shock.
At the beginning of the period, in the post-war doldrums of the fifties, we find paintings of the Kitchen Sink School, but by the end of the decade the development of Pop Art, with new brash images, inspired by popular culture here and in America, helped to brighten the way into the Swinging Sixties. Since then, British Art has gone from strength to strength, making the UK the leading centre of western art at the beginning of the 21st century.
Sculpture in the Twentieth Century
19th February 2009 Lecturer: Linda Smith
This Study day will trace key developments in sculpture from the days of Rodin at the turn of the twentieth century to the Sensation generation one hundred years later. This period saw tremendous changes to the appearance of art, the materials from which it can be made and the ideas about what it is for. The talks will investigate all of these aspects of sculpture and examine how they relate to changes in other visual arts, particularly painting and film.
For clarity, the format of the discussion will be broadly chronological in order to demonstrate how and why sculptors travelled from large lumps of white marble at one end of the century, to preserved sharks at the other. This will involve looking at the work of an extremely diverse range of artists. At all times, of course, their work will be discussed in terms of what really made it: the unprecedented social upheaval, intellectual curiosity, technological advances and the terrifying violence of the twentieth century.
Place: Roland Levinsky Building, Drake Circus, University of Plymouth
Time: Lectures will start at 11.00am and finish around 3.30pm
Cost: Each Study Day will cost £25.00 excluding lunch. Refreshments will be available.
